Property Summary
A quintessential three bedroom double fronted detached period village house set in beautiful English cottage gardens with views over open country, in a secluded position at the top of a hill in the sought after village of Farleigh Hungerford, 7.5 miles from the heart of Georgian Bath.
The vendor says: “I used to cycle past Falconers when my daughter was nine or ten and always dreamed of living in this old house which was said to be the home of the Falconer for Farleigh Castle. When she was at university we managed to buy it and it was everything I could have imagined and more. The house, which dates back to sixteenth century, is unusual for a period property as it is so light. Also, it is a bit like a Tardis – much bigger than it looks from the outside. The front door opens onto a lovely large hall which was originally used as a dining room. Leading off the hall is a downstairs wc and small utility room. The Mark Wilkinson kitchen is our favourite room in the house, a bright room with cream coloured units, topazio white granite worktop and limestone floor. We have a cream electric Aga, a Miele fan oven, stainless steel sink and room for a table and six chairs as well as a sofa. There are French doors leading out to the terrace and the beautiful southwest facing garden. Leading off the kitchen is a small office with window facing out to the garden. The sitting room is dual aspect, looking out over fields and is light all day. There are built in bookshelves and an open fire, so that it is very cosy in winter, but with double doors out to the terrace which are always open in summer. Upstairs there are there are three bedrooms, the smallest one is a double room, but we currently have two beds in there for our grandchildren when they visit. Next to this is a guest bathroom with bath and shower over. The guest bedroom is very bright, with a French window opening onto a balcony with views over the garden. The principal bedroom has wardrobes on the left-hand side and an en-suite with shower. This double aspect room looks out over fields and over the front to my rose garden with Albertine roses and Sally Holmes roses as well as honeysuckle. Beyond this is an orchard, owned by our neighbours.”
“The garden was very uninspiring when we first came here but now it is a typical English country garden with alliums, roses, honeysuckle, clematis, peonies, daisies, and alstroemeria with a raised vegetable patch at the top of the garden as well as a lawn, dry stone walling and circular flowerbed, silver birch trees, specimen cherry tree, and clematis. We sit out here all summer on the paved sun terrace and enjoy the views over the fields and listening to the birds. There is a double brick built garage which has power and water and potential to convert into an annexe or home workspace and also has a storeroom at the rear. There is additional parking on the drive.”
“The walks from Falconers are brilliant. From Farleigh Castle you can follow the footpath along the riverbank which will take you to Iford Manor and the beautiful Peto Garden to enjoy a delicious cream tea. National trust at Stourhead is also well worth a visit and there are many more places of interest in the area.
There is a farm shop in Farleigh Hungerford (1.1 miles) and a Marks and Spencer’s in nearby Beckington as well as White Row Farm shop (4.8 miles) in Beckington. Bradford on Avon is 4.3 miles away with the well regarded St Laurence’s senior school (Ofsted ‘Good’) and junior school in Norton St Philip First School (‘Ofsted ‘Good’). There are many excellent private schools in Bath, which is 7.5 miles away. “This has been such a lovely home in countless respects, and we will be very sad to leave, but are moving closer to our daughter and her family.”
