Property Summary
Spring House is a very attractive period property that enjoys an enviable location within the delightful rural village of Carlingcott. The house was originally built in c1861 for the mine manager of Dunkerton colliery, but in more recent years the property has been extended and improved to maximize the use of the adjacent buildings, so it’s now a really spacious and characterful family home. “My husband loved country living, and so when his job was relocated to Bath we saw it as the ideal opportunity to move somewhere a little more rural. This house is surrounded by open farmland, so that box was ticked, but the Coach House also offered ready-made studio accommodation that was ideal for our teenage son, and being close to really good transport links meant that I was able to commute into London. In short it offered everything we had been looking for.”
“When we moved here the interior could only be described as an icon of the 1980s and externally the house also needed a lot of work, so over the years we’ve had to do a huge amount to bring it up to scratch and make it much more conducive to modern living. We refurbished the kitchens and bathrooms, decorated throughout, overhauled the heating systems in both the main house and the Coach House and had all the windows replaced with double-glazed units that are in keeping with the age and appearance of the property. However, I suppose the biggest change we made was to add a really gorgeous sunroom that takes in the fabulous views. The house is now an extremely comfortable and really beautiful home.”
“As well as completely renovating and modernising the house, we’ve also done a lot of work to the garden,” continues Elizabeth, “and around six or seven years ago we purchased the adjacent orchard that originally belonged to the house. We now have just over two acres that incorporate open lawns, a vegetable garden and lots of apple trees. It’s a gorgeous space and the orchard has the potential to suit a range of uses.”
“The house is positioned on the side of a hill but on a very level site, so the views from the sunroom are absolutely breathtaking,” says Elizabeth. “Since we had it built it has opened up a most beautiful panorama. We can see right the way across our grounds to the countryside beyond and the sunsets are amazing.”
“The house sits on the periphery of the village, so it’s wonderfully peaceful here but we’ve never felt isolated,” says Elizabeth. “There’s a strong sense of community, which is something I really like, and there are a lot of clubs and groups to get involved with. I also love the fact that we’re just six miles from Bath, so everything we could possibly want or need is within easy reach.”
“The Coach House is a very pretty building that sits just across the drive from the house,” says Elizabeth. “On the ground floor it has a separate home office and two garages, and above that is the self-contained studio apartment which has a kitchen, a bathroom and a large bedroom and sitting area. It also has the most amazing views.”
“What will I miss most? I suppose it’s the wonderful lifestyle that the property has afforded us,” says Elizabeth. “The house and grounds are just beautiful, the community is really supportive and location offers relatively easy access to just about everything. In my mind it’s ideal.”
