Property Summary
Colerne is a pretty village in the glorious Wiltshire countryside, and the present owner, Kate, immediately fell in love with its rural charm and tranquillity. When it was viewed others fell in love with it too, and they found ourselves in a contract race which they won in just two weeks - from first viewing to completion!
Colerne has a friendly and active community with shops for everyday needs, a primary school with numerous clubs and activities. However it is only seven miles from vibrant and historic Bath, where you will find excellent shopping, a wide choice of restaurants, theatre, and an annual music festival. Bristol and Swindon are also within easy reach, and from nearby Chippenham station, it is only just over an hour into London Paddington. The village enjoys a fantastic location overlooking Box Valley, and is surrounded by beautiful walking countryside.
Kate explains that the house has a Victorian façade but dates from the sixteenth century, and has been told that there is soot dating back to the medieval era. The exposed beams, mullion windows, impressive front door and open fireplaces are charming period features that give the house great character, whilst blending seamlessly with the comforts of modern living.
She describes how the house provides an ultra-agreeable life style, in its charming rooms. It is a relaxed and welcoming home with space for everyone to find peace and quiet, but with rooms large enough to bring everyone together. The period delight of the sitting room creates the perfect place for calm relaxation particularly with the morning sun or on winter evenings in front of the most glorious open fire: and the snug, which is the oldest part of the house is a cosy room filled with quirky features , where you relish the warmth from the glowing wood burner.
The kitchen is the engine room of the house. It is a gregarious and happy space where all decisions are taken whilst sitting round the kitchen table. More formal meals are appreciated in the attractive, beamed dining hall with a rare double arch, whilst the loft and cellar are great storage places.
Kate says the easy flow of ground floor rooms makes Elm Lodge the perfect family home enjoyed by family and friends.
The front garden provides a most agreeable invitation to the house. The trailing wisteria, soft shrubbery, lawns and natural stone wall have a quintessential English country garden appeal. To the rear there are pretty, tranquil and secluded areas to enjoy al fresco meals or just sitting.
Kate will be very sad to leave Elm Lodge which has been a superb family home for over 30 years, and will take away very many happy memories.
