Property Summary
A two bedroom, two bathroom garden maisonette in a handsome Georgian terrace built in 1762 right in the centre of Bath.
“The sense of history, the quiet location and this light and spacious apartment really appeal to us, along with our lovely, peaceful and private walled garden. There is a welcoming communal entrance to the building, with fine cornicing in the hall and over the stairs, and Doric pilasters to the hall arch. Our apartment has a small hall which opens onto the sitting-room which is at ground level, facing the street. It is a light, airy, well-proportioned room with high ceilings, cornicing and two sash windows with their original shutters. There is an attractive fireplace with gas fire which makes this a cosy room in the winter. The first double bedroom also has high ceilings and cornicing and is opposite the sitting-room. It is currently used as an office and benefits from a beautiful balcony overlooking our south facing garden. We often have coffee on the balcony, or indeed lunch and supper, as it is such a pleasant place to sit. Our apartment is next door to the Herschel Museum of Astronomy – the home of William and Caroline Herschel the famous eighteenth century astronomers and composers - which also has a nice garden to look at from here.”
“There is an upstairs bathroom three steps down from this floor, with bath, basin and WC. On the lower ground level, we have a spacious kitchen/diner at the front of the apartment. This has a table which comfortably seats 10 where we have had many happy meals with friends and family. The kitchen overlooks a courtyard at the front with two vaults. The kitchen has grey gloss cabinets with wood-effect worktops. The useful utility room leads off the kitchen and has storage shelves and space for a large fridge/freezer and washing machine, and has a door opening out to the vault area. The main double bedroom is at the rear. It is a very tranquil space, with a large sash window overlooking the garden. A short corridor leads to the back of the property to a shower room with sink and WC and to a glazed door that opens onto the patio area, the scene of many barbeques and dinner parties. There is a lawn in the middle of the garden with scalloped, wide borders full of shrubs and flowers: choisya, hydrangeas, roses, and rudbeckia to name a few. At the bottom of the garden is an ancient mulberry tree, which we really enjoy. It is surprisingly peaceful sitting in our garden; New King Street has no through traffic, mainly pedestrians and cyclists, so we feel really privileged to live in the heart of the city but it is so calm.“
“We have residents parking (Zone 6) but we hardly ever need to drive. We can walk down to Green Park to the Farmers’ Market and Artisans’ Market or pop in to the big Sainsbury’s or walk up through Queen’s Square to the shops on Milsom Street. The theatre and cinema are very close, and it is a flat 0.6 mile walk to Bath Spa Railway station, ideal for trips to London (79 minutes) or Bristol (12 minutes). The nearby Griffin Inn is our favourite pub, but of course you are spoilt for choice with all the cafes, restaurants and bars in Bath within easy walking distance. It has been such a pleasure to sit in our garden or to go for walks in Royal Victoria Park or along the river in or out of town. We have really enjoyed living in this historic home with so much on our doorstep, and our lovely garden with the mulberry tree.“
