Property Summary

Renovated, elegant, light filled period four bedroom family house with one bedroom annex, gardens, ample parking and country views located on the edge of the village of Chilcompton, 14.5 miles from Georgian Bath and 6.4 miles from the cathedral city of Wells.

“It was the light, airy open feel to this beautiful house with high ceilings and imbued with history that really appealed to us when we moved here four years ago. The Court has been a hotel and previously was a courthouse for the infamous Judge Jeffries in 1685. In fact, there has been a house on this site for six hundred years. The current unlisted Georgian property was entirely renovated very sensitively over 2016-2018, retaining most of the gorgeous original features. On entering there is a grand hall with tiled floor and a glass atrium above, flooding the entrance with light. There are shaker style cupboards in the hall for boots and coats storage. There is a wc to the right and a grand staircase leads to the upper floor from the main hall. On the right hand side is an office or playroom with high ceilings and sash windows overlooking the front lawn. The hall opens into the main sitting room with two huge French doors out to the garden. The sitting room has a feature fireplace made of cast iron and opens into another spacious, airy reception area with wood burning stove. This is an ideal space for parties as the two rooms flow into each other and into the kitchen, as well as outside to the south facing garden, but the siting room area can also be closed off with double doors. The bespoke kitchen is gorgeous with oak flooring and a central island which has a beautiful granite worktop flecked with browns and creams. There are cream shaker style fitted units with wooden worktops and Fired Earth tiles. There is a ‘Range’ cooker with a big gas hob, electric double oven and large extractor fan. A beautiful light filled breakfast atrium completes the kitchen.“

“A useful utility room adjoins the kitchen. This door leads into the annex which could be used for a relative living separately or a holiday let as it has its own access. There is a double bedroom with bathroom with shower and bath and a kitchen/sitting room. Back in the main house the grand staircase leads up to the first floor. There is a huge window here over the stairs looking out across the Mendips and with a fine view of the enormous 460 year old oak tree. Upstairs are four double bedrooms, all with lofty ceilings and filled with light. The principal bedroom has fitted wardrobes, a cast iron fireplace which is painted white, double glazed sash windows (as there are throughout the whole house) and stunning views over fields. The en suite bathroom has a rainforest open shower, underfloor heating, views over fields and Fired Earth tiles. On the other side of the landing is an en suite bedroom with shower, underfloor heating, panelling in the bedroom and views over the front. Adjacent to this is another bedroom with a cast iron fireplace and the bed located inside an original plaster arch. The large family bathroom has a free standing bath, rainforest shower, and decorative Fired Earth tiles. The fourth bedroom at the front of the house is another double room with a cast iron fireplace painted white, views over the front garden and loft hatch access. There are two lofts in the house as there is a double gable to the roof.”

“Throughout the house there are many retained period features, such as plaster arches, original doors, architraves, deep Georgian skirting boards, and we really love the light everywhere and the beautiful Georgian proportions. The house is so graceful and has been used frequently as a set location for marketing and drama. Underneath the house is a large cellar, which we use for storage, but could be converted into a cinema room or gym.”

“The house is set on a plot of three quarters of an acre, and to the front there is a lawn which is covered in colourful crocuses in Spring, and ancient oak trees, a cedar and elm tree, as well as a gravel drive which has parking for up to fifteen vehicles. The back of the house has a paved area with room for a table and chairs, from the double doors leading into a large lawn. This garden is south facing and is an incredible sun trap. Overall, it is a brilliant party space, perfect for entertaining from the house, or ideal for relaxing with the family in the sun.”

“Chilcompton is a friendly village with a thriving community. There is a Co-op, and a Primary school St Vigor and St John, petrol station/garage, and a variety of sports facilities including badminton, Pilates and karate. Various village events such as an annual flower show are well supported. Senior schools include Writhlington, Wells Cathedral School which specialises in music, Downside School, Sidcot, All Hallows Preparatory School and Millfield School in Street, as well as Hayesfield and Beechen Cliff in Bath.”

“The glamourous Babington House members’ club is 6.7 miles away, and Bristol Airport is 15.3 miles away. There are so many beautiful walks from the house, and we have felt so lucky to have lived in such a stylish family home with so much history, yet with such a modern specification.”
